The UK government has announced a £5 million funding boost to support 26 innovative rail projects designed to transform the passenger experience and make rail travel safer and more reliable. Backed by the Department for Transport (DfT) in collaboration with Innovate UK, these projects aim to introduce cutting-edge technologies that will modernise the railway system and improve services for passengers across the country.

The funding is part of the First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) competition, which identifies and supports groundbreaking ideas to solve some of the rail industry’s biggest challenges. Another project, SafeRide 5G, will enable passengers to report incidents privately and securely using onboard Wi-Fi, allowing for faster responses and improved passenger safety.

This is not the first time the FOAK programme has delivered impactful results. Previous winners, such as the Portable Track Geometry Measurement System, are already in use across the UK rail network. This technology provides real-time track data to engineers, helping them lift speed restrictions or reopen closed lines more quickly, which ultimately reduces delays and keeps passengers moving.
